Patrons are allowed to check-out up to 50 items in various combinations, except where specific items are limited.

Holds/Reserves
Items placed on reserve are held behind the Circulation desk for 1 week. The requesting patron is notified when the item is available for pickup. Patrons can request to be notified by phone or by email when the item is ready to be picked up. Items which have not been picked up within the one-week time frame will be given to the next patron on the reserve list. The patron with the original hold request will remain on the list and be notified when the book is available, again. The library is not obligated to notify patrons the reserve has been given to the next person on the list.
Inter Library Loan
Inter Library Loan (ILL) is a service provided to patrons to request items that the Bradley Beach Free Public Library does not have in its collection. This service uses a network of other libraries throughout the state to share resources. Items borrowed through ILL are held behind the Circulation desk for one week. The requesting patron is notified upon receipt of the item. Items not picked within 10 days will be returned to the lending library.
Patrons are responsible for any fines or fees assessed by the lending library for late return or loss of materials. If a patron loses an ILL, they are responsible for paying the costs charged by the lending library for the item(s).
Patrons can request renewals of ILL materials but permission has to be granted by the lending library. For that reason, the patron should request the renewal by phone or email (staff@bradleybeachlibrary.org) a week before the due date.
Patrons who abuse the ILL process and are habitually late returning items or frequently lose ILL items will have their ILL privileges suspended.
Renewals
Eligible items may be renewed by phone, through the website, or by email to staff@bradleybeachlibrary.org.
All items are automatically renewed excluding the following:
- Items that have active holds
- Items that have reached their renewal limited
- iPads
- Mobile Hotspot
- Museum Passes
Overdue Materials
The library sends the cardholder up to two notifications (electronically or by mail) of overdue items at seven days overdue and again at 14 days overdue. However, the responsibility for returning borrowed materials and paying all fines and fees accrued is not conditional upon the cardholder receiving overdue notification.
The library suspends borrowing privileges when $25.00 or more in overdue fines, fees, and/or lost materials has accrued and/or is posted on the cardholder’s account. Staff restores borrowing privileges promptly when materials are returned, found, or paid for and accounts are settled.
The library offers customers pre-overdue courtesy reminder notices, via email only, for items coming due in three days.
The library staff are authorized to revoke privileges at any time before issuing notices, when abuse of borrowing privileges so warrants.
Lost and Damaged Library Materials
Any items overdue by 14 days will be deemed “lost” and the cardholder’s account will be charged accordingly. The cardholder is responsible for the full replacement cost of lost items. Patrons will not be reimbursed for lost items once they have paid for the replacement.
The library does not charge the cardholder for damage due to normal use. Library materials that are damaged due to normal use remain the property of the Library.
The library charges the cardholders for items damaged beyond normal use. Cardholders may keep the damaged materials for which they have paid, if they pick-up the returned damaged item within 14 days, after which the library disposes of them. Charges for loss or damage of the library’s mobile hotspot, iPads, museum passes, and library kits and non-traditional circulating items can be found listed in those polices. For all other circulating items, the cost is listed in the item’s record. In the event no price is listed in the library catalog, a price list can be found in the Appendix of this policy manual. The library will also accept a replacement of the lost item in new or like-new condition in lieu of payment.
iPad Circulation Policy
To promote access to online resources, the Bradley Beach Free Public Library(Library) circulates iPads. At this time, Bradley Beach Free Public Library has 4 iPads for checkout.
Eligibility
An iPad may be checked out by any Bradley Beach Free Public Library cardholder, 18 years or older, with a valid Bradley Beach Free Public Library card in good standing (i.e. card is not expired or blocked due to unpaid fines or fees). All borrowers must sign a User Agreement of this policy and show their Library card at the time of checkout. A User Agreement must be signed each time the device is checked out, regardless of previous device checkouts by a patron. Patrons with juvenile cards are not eligible to checkout iPads. The Library reserves the right to refuse to check the device out to patrons who abuse Library equipment or have a history of returning items late and/or losing/damaging items.
Loan Period & Checkout
Checkouts for iPads are on a first-come, first-served basis. iPads circulate for a 10-day loan period (no renewals). A household is eligible to borrow only one iPad at a time. iPads are only checked out in person at the Bradley Beach Free Public Library circulation desk. iPads may be reserved online just as a book or other library item may be reserved. Each iPad unit circulates in a case with a case, Apple quick start guide, patron instructions, headphones, charging cable, base plug, library instructions, supporting documents, and a copy of this agreement. Under no circumstances should the iPad be removed from its protective case by a borrower. A cardholder may not borrow an iPad for 10-days from the system-generated due date, regardless if the borrower brings back an iPad before it is due. If a reservation is made by the same borrower before the 10-day window has passed, the staff reserves the right to cancel the reservation. Should this occur the patron will receive an email notification.
At the time of checkout, a staff member will verify all iPad components (case, Apple quick start guide, patron instructions, headphones, charging cable, base plug, library instructions, supporting documents, and a copy of this agreement).
Returns
Overdue iPads will be charged $10.00 fee per day. Overdue fees will be capped at $570. If the iPad is not returned two weeks after the due date, the device will be assumed lost and the patron will be billed for the lost device and components at market value for a replacement. Patrons are responsible for paying the cost to replace the lost device and components. iPads are fragile and must, therefore, be returned at the circulation desk and not in the book drops. Patrons returning iPads to the book drop will be charged the cost of any damages to the device plus $5.00 for violation of the User’s Agreement. When returning the iPad, please wait for a staff member to check through all components, while you are present to be sure everything is returned otherwise, you may incur damage, lost, and/or late fees.
Lost or Damaged iPad
The borrower is responsible for damage, loss, or theft to the iPad and all of its components. The charge for a lost or damaged iPad is $570, which is the current market value for the device and the case. A lost or damaged charging cable, bag, headphones, or base plug will result in a fee equal to the market value of the component(s). The Bradley Beach Free Public Library reserves the right to refuse service to patrons who abuse equipment or are repeatedly late in returning Library materials. Three (3) late returns for any device checked-out will result in being permanently banned from borrowing all electronic devices from the Library. If any technical problems arise, patrons should return the device immediately to the Bradley Beach Free Public Library and inform Library staff of the issue.
Proper Care and Use:
- The iPad will work wherever there is a Wi-Fi connection or hotspot.
- Tampering, adjusting, attempting to repair, or altering the iPad in anyway is prohibited and will result in the suspension of device borrowing privileges.
- Do not adjust, attempt to repair, or alter the iPad in any way. Doing so will result in the suspension of device borrowing privileges.
- Once the device is fully charged, unplug it and let the battery run down before charging again. Do not leave the iPad plugged in after it is fully charged.
- Please return the iPad fully charged.
- As iPads are fragile, they should not be exposed to extreme conditions (heat or cold), falls, or sand/dirt. Do not leave the iPad and its components in a hot car for an extended length of time.
- The Library cannot guarantee Wi-Fi or hotspot connection speeds. These are dependent on the point of access.
- Do not leave the device unattended. Patrons are responsible for any damage or theft while the iPad is checked out to their account.
- Patrons are not to purchase replacement parts for any lost or damaged components–the Library is responsible for procuring replacement components.

The Bradley Beach Free Public Library is not responsible for information accessed using this device or for personal information shared over the Internet. iPad users are encouraged to follow safe internet practices. This includes full retail replacement costs as well as associated library processing fees.
- Library staff will inspect all kits and other items upon check-out and check-in to the library to make sure all parts are included. Any missing items will be charged to the patron with no exceptions.

Each Hotspot unit circulates in a case with a micro-USB cord, AC charger with USB port, instruction manual, and copy of this policy. In the event of an emergency where the Library is without LAN and/or wireless Internet, the Library reserves the right to reserve Hotspots to provide wireless service at the Library for public use. A cardholder may not borrow a Hotspot for 10-days from the system-generated due date, regardless if the borrower brings back a Hotspot before it is due. If a reservation is made by the same borrower before the 10-day window has passed, the staff reserves the right to cancel the reservation. Should this occur the patron will receive an email notification.
At the time of checkout, a staff member will verify all Hotspot components (case, Hotspot, micro-USB cord, AC charger with USB port, instruction manual, and copy of this policy).
